Everything you should know about Borussia Dortmund vs RB Salzburg before starting
Three things to look out for ahead of Borussia Dortmund vs RB Salzburg
Borussia Dortmund face RB Salzburg of Austria in their Europa League Round of 16 tie, with the first leg in Germany on Thursday.
The Black and Yellows go into the tie as favourites, having a much superior squad and resources compared to their Austrian rivals. Borussia Dortmund made it hard work to get past Atalanta in the last round, however, so nothing can be taken for granted.
Salzburg will be determined to cause an upset and go through to the quarterfinals. But Borussia Dortmund have shown their ability to get results this year, even when they’re not at their best. It is set to be a pulsating tie, with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line.
Here are three things to look forward to in the first leg at the Westfalenstadion.
Will Peter Stöger take the Europa League seriously?
At times in Borussia Dortmund’s tie against Atalanta, it looked like the players were getting complacent. Peter Stöger’s team selection in the second leg also showed some complacency on his part.
Dortmund’s priority at the moment seems to be a top four finish, with Europa League not as important, considering the high level of competition.
But with only 16 teams left in the competition, a relatively easy tie, favourites Napoli already knocked out, and possible rivals facing each other, it makes a lot of sense for Borussia Dortmund to take the Europa League seriously.
And when you look at Borussia Dortmund’s games remaining in the league, it makes even more sense to prioritize the Europa League. With a tough run in ahead in the league, winning the Europa League could prove to be an alternate way for Dortmund to get into the Champions League. While we are still far away from the final, we’ll know more about Stöger’s priorities for the season once the team sheets are released tomorrow.
